Finite clauses vs. Non - finite clauses

Hello guys welcome to my second post. I appreciate all your coments and I hope this post likes it too.

Today we will briefly talk about the difference between the finite and the non-finite clauses.

First we will describe what they are about.

Finite clauses

Finite clauses are the ones that must contain a verb which shows tense. They can be main clauses or subordinate clauses:
  1. Are you sleeping now? (main: present continuous)
  2. I went out with my boyfriend last night. (main: past)
  3. We didn’t get any food because we didn’t have enough time. (main: past; subordinate: past)

Non-finite clauses

Non-finite clauses are the ones that contain a verb which DOES NOT shows tense.

We usually use non-finite verbs only in subordinate clauses.

We often use a non-finite clause when the subject of the sentence and the main clause is the same. Ex:

  1. I took a shower before coming here. (I took a shower before I came here.)
  2. After eating a lot, we went to walk for an hour.
  3. Assaulted by a thief, the lady was crying in the bus station.
  4. The person to ask about buying the car is my cousin.

Non-finite After, although, though, and if

We often use non-finite clauses after some subordinating conjunctions like after, although, though and if:

By the end of the day, although having money, Mario prefered not eating rather than buying food. (although he had money)

After verbs + -ing or infinitive with to

We use non-finite clauses as the complements to verbs which take -ing or to-infinitive after them:
  1. I enjoy swimming in the pool.
  2. She would hate to play tennis against her best friend.

So after this explanation, What is the main difference between both?

Finite clauses ALWAYS HAVE  A VERB THAT EXPRESS A TENSE (present,  past, future) and the non finite clauses can have verbs but THEY DO NOT EXPRESS ANY TENSE (gerunds, infinitives, bare infinitives, verbless).

This information helped me to understand better the finite and the non finite clauses and to see what is the difference between both. I hope my blog can help you to understand it.

As a final help, I will give you the link for a video that explains better the finite and the nonfinite clauses.

LEARNING ALL THE SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS

We know that learning all the subordinate conjunctions it´s quite difficult because there are a lot 馃槺, and some of them have more than one use 馃槕. But don´t worry, we are not the only ones with the same issue 馃槖. In this blog I will tell you what I did to memorize the majority of them.

First, I read all the material from the lesson 25 馃槳, but besides reading it, I was trying to understand it, so I read it like 2 times and I felt very happy when I understood it all 馃榿.

Second, I focused on the box on page 387 from the Grammar Book. This is the table 馃憖:

After it, I tried to make some oral examples with the conjunctions that appeared on the box 馃槷. That helped me not only to acquired the knowledge, but also to apply it in my real life with examples regarding to my environment.                                                                  As a final step, I looked on Internet for some games using the subordinate conjunctions because I love to learn by games. That helped me to analize the context and to know how and when to use a subordinate conjunction. Here are the links of some games I used:

What I liked about this topic is that the subordinate conjunctions are really useful, more than we think they could be, It took me like a week to learn them well but also I´ve been using them frequently because I don´t want to forget them 馃挭. So if you still have some difficulties with the subordinate conjunctions I hope this steps can help you to improve, or if you are already a master using them tell me,  How did you do to learn them?
